2018 Yamaha AR190 review: What We’ve Loved and Learned

2018 Yamaha AR190 review

It’s been seven years since we bought our 2018 Yamaha AR190, and it’s safe to say this boat has been part of countless memories for our family. If you’re looking for a real-world, long-term review of this popular jet boat, we’ve got you covered. From our very first launch to our most recent lake trip, here’s what we’ve loved — and what we’ve learned — after nearly a decade of ownership. Here’s your 2018 Yamaha AR190 Review.

✅ The Pros That Still Hold Up

  • Jet Propulsion = Peace of Mind: No exposed propeller makes it safer for kids and swimmers.
  • Low Maintenance: We’ve spent more time on the water than in the shop. Yamaha’s marine engines are rock-solid.
  • Trailer Included: Still one of the best parts of the purchase — no storage facility needed.
  • Sleek Styling: Even after 7 years, we still get compliments at the ramp.
  • Fits in a Standard Garage: This has saved us thousands in off-site storage fees.
  • Solid Entry-Level Investment: Affordable to buy, affordable to maintain.

❌ The Cons That Grew Noticeable Over Time

  • Outdated Helm Display: That analog/digital dash looked dated in 2018 — and it hasn’t aged well.
  • Budget Build in Some Areas: The upholstery has shown wear, the cup holders needed replacing, and we upgraded the radio within year two.
  • Power Limits: The single jet engine works, but when the boat is fully loaded with adults, it struggles to get on plane quickly.
  • Storage Layout: While there’s plenty of storage, it’s not easily accessible when the boat is full.

What You Actually Need to Get Started

Buying the boat was easy — getting water-ready just took a starter kit, a few essentials, and gas. We started with the Yamaha Boat Starter Kit, which included:

  • (4) Universal Yamaha Life Vests
  • Air Horn
  • First-Aid Kit
  • (4) Dock Lines
  • (2) Contoured Bumpers & Straps
  • Life Preserver

The boat also came with 2 fire extinguishers, and we added a solid anchor soon after. Over the years, we’ve replaced or upgraded most of this gear — a good reminder that boating is an ongoing investment.

On the Water: Then vs. Now

Back in 2018, we said the AR190 handled like a giant jet ski — and that’s still true. It’s quick, responsive, and very forgiving for first-time boaters.

Seven years later, we still love cruising the lake. It’s not the fastest or most luxurious boat on the water, but it’s incredibly fun, dependable, and affordable.

Even with regular use, minimal repairs, and very little hassle, it’s continued to deliver value.

Upgrade Plans? Absolutely.

As much as we love this boat, we’re ready for a bit more space and power. We’ve got our eyes on the Yamaha AR210 or the 212 Limited S — both models fix the issues we’ve lived with, offering:

  • Dual engines for better performance
  • Upgraded displays and sound systems
  • More seating and storage
  • Higher capacity for family and friends

Final Thoughts: Was It Worth It?

Without a doubt. After 7 years of lake days, tubing adventures, and family outings, the Yamaha AR190 has earned its keep. It’s been:

  • Reliable
  • Easy to store
  • Easy to tow
  • Fun to drive
  • Affordable to maintain

If you’re a first-time boat buyer, we still think this is one of the best starter boats out there. And if you’re like us, you’ll love it so much that upgrading to a bigger Yamaha will feel like a natural next step.

We’ve taken this boat to several local lakes over the years — though one of our biggest regrets was not bringing it with us when we stayed at Red Wolf Lodge at Lake Tahoe. The water was perfect, and it would’ve been the ideal place to enjoy everything the AR190 offers. If you’re planning a trip up there, check out our full Red Wolf Lodge Lake Tahoe review here.
