The Halloween Experience…

|

Let’s just start with, Every day should be Halloween! We just recorded an episode about the History of Halloween and personally I believe every day should be Halloween. The recording session went great and there was a bunch of great information shared. It made me look at Halloween in a different light, which made me appreciate it more.

The Day of…

The day started with a Halloween Parade at the kids school, then we volunteered in their class. It was fun to see all the kids just having fun and meeting some on the parents of the kids. After school, we set up our pumpkin carving stations up in the backyard and got to carving. Now this is something new for this year, normally we would have had our pumpkins carved out sooner but there was a last minute change to the day. The kids did their best to help out but it was mainly the wife and I gutting and carving. The fun part for my wife is, she loves saving the seeds so she can roast them.

After the carving came dinner, we went to a local restaurant for dinner. When we got back home, that’s when the festivities started. As the wife was getting the kids ready I was outside getting the house ready for trick or treaters. There wasn’t much to be done since we’ve had our house decorated since September but I wanted to add some spooky lights, set-up up our pumpkins and get some Halloween music playing. After the set-up all we had to do was wait for the sun to go down.

At Sunset…

Once the sun went down the wife and the kids set off for their round of trick or treating. The weather was cold but that rarely stops any kid on their quest for candy. The way the lights were set up on the house it was hard for the unsuspecting kids to see me. I got a couple scares out of them. What I loved the most was all the kids and families out and about. All the kids were well mannered and said Thank You, also all the parents seemed so grateful as well. When the kids got back they told me about all their experiences and helped give out the rest of the candy. We shut it down by 8:30pm.

The Community…

After learning the origins of Halloween, it really made me think. With it’s intertwining of cultures and attempts to suppress it, to me it became one of the most community oriented holidays celebrated in America. The holiday’s origin is riddled with ghosts and spirits, the commemoration of the passing of the dead and the transition from fall to winter. Winter being a time of hardship and strife in certain parts of the world. Halloween is the only holiday that encourages you to go out in the community and interact with your neighbors, even though you’re in a mask and under the veil of darkness. It’s a ancient tradition that has been twisted and molded over the years but still stands the test of time. Also it heartwarming to just sit and see kids, just be kids.
